Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar (UAE), one of the world’s leading companies in environmentally friendly energy, has signed an agreement with Uzbekhydroenergo JSC, the primary purpose of which is to solve problems with interruptions in electricity supplies.
The possibility of building pumped storage hydroelectric power plants throughout Uzbekistan will be explored within the framework of the agreement.
According to the International Hydropower Association (IHA), pumped-storage hydroelectric power plants account for more than 90 percent of the world’s installed energy storage capacity. Their capacity may reach 240 GW by 2030.
Despite the extensive portfolio of projects in environmentally friendly energy (in December 2023, Masdar’s developments in solar and wind power with a total capacity of 1.4 GW were introduced into Uzbekistan’s energy system), today’s agreement represents Masdar’s first entry into the sector of pumped storage power plants in Uzbekistan.
According to the long-term development strategy, the country's share of hydropower in its total energy balance is planned to increase significantly by 2030. In this regard, it is important to focus on and actively start implementing projects for the construction of new and modernized hydroelectric power plants, improving infrastructure, and attracting investments in this sphere.
