Lakes, swamps and shores in the Aral Sea area are taken under protection

The Global Environment Facility supported the implementation of the project “Conservation and sustainable management of lakes, wetlands, and riparian corridors as pillars of a resilient and land degradation neutral Aral basin landscape supporting sustainable livelihoods”.

The total cost of the project is 3 million 552 thousand 968 dollars. It is scheduled to be implemented within five years.

“This project will serve to prevent soil degradation in the Aral Sea region, restore soil, improve management of the restoration system, preserve natural landscapes, achieve ecosystem sustainability based on further land use”, says Ulbosin Mirnazarova, Press Secretary of the Committee for Environmental Protection and Ecology of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. – The UNDP Uzbekistan allocated 270 thousand dollars for the project. Within the framework of the project, the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the UNDP Uzbekistan signed an Agreement on services to assist in the implementation of the project.

Based on the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan “On measures to implement the project “Conservation and sustainable management of lakes, wetlands, and riparian corridors as pillars of a resilient and land degradation neutral Aral basin landscape supporting sustainable livelihoods” with the participation of the United Nations Development Programme and the Global Environment Facility” of November 30, 2022, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and the Hokimiyat of Bukhara region, together with the relevant ministries and agencies, are developing an action plan for 2022-2026.
