Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has been implementing large-scale projects in Uzbekistan for many years. The cooperation began in 1995 as part of a project to create the Uzbekistan – Korean Friendship Hospital.

The Representative Office of the Agency in Uzbekistan, together with several ministries and agencies, is working on reforms in medicine. As a result, stability in the sphere is ensured.

At the initiative of KOICA, a delegation led by Kim Woong-Han, Professor of the Children's Hospital at Seoul National University, arrived at the National Children’s Medical Center in Tashkent.

The delegation visits Uzbekistan to conduct training within the framework of the project on improving the skills of the staff of the National Children’s Medical Center, the use of simulation in the training of nurses, improving the skills of the Center’s specialists in conducting operations and providing emergency medical care to children.

The project worth $7 million aims to improve the skills of the Medical Сenter staff in 2018-2023. Within the framework of the project, several tasks have been identified, such as improving the quality of medical care for children, improving the skills of medical personnel, and exchanging experience.

“We arrived in Uzbekistan to treat children with heart diseases and perform complex operations”, said Kyu Sang Lee, a cardiologist at Seoul National University Children’s Hospital. – We must help children with congenital heart disease and do our best to keep them healthy.

The delegation of the Seoul Hospital, consisting of five doctors, two nurses and two students, together with specialists from Uzbekistan, performed eight complex cardiac surgeries. All operated children undergo rehabilitation and feel well.

“After we found out that our son had a heart defect, we were regularly observed by doctors. We arrived at the National Children’s Medical Center. My son survived the operation well and is now under the supervision of Korean specialists. I express my deep gratitude to KOICA representatives for providing necessary assistance promptly”, said the mother of one of the patients, Janona Almanova.

KOICA provides practical assistance in the implementation of several healthcare projects in Uzbekistan. On June 23, the second round of the staff development project was signed at the National Children’s Medical Center.
