In 1435, the largest Kok Gumbaz cathedral mosque was built in the architectural complex Dorut-Tillavat in Shakhrisabz, opposite the Shamsiddin Kulol mausoleum. The inscription on its portal says that it was erected by Ulugbek on behalf of Shakhrukh’s father.
The mosque is crowned with a magnificent huge dome covered with blue ceramic tiles. It is named Kok Gumbaz, which literally means “blue dome”. Kufic inscription containing ayahs from the Quran surah applied around the dome.
The architectural complex Dorut-Tillavat leaves a lasting impression, recalling the brilliant historical past of Shakhrisabz.
Kok Gumbaz mosque was restored in the 70s of the last century and in 1995-1996 to the 660th Anniversary of Amir Timur.
