On October 15, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed the project for a new international airport in Tashkent region and took part in the ceremony marking the start of its construction.
The initiative, implemented with the support of an international consortium that includes leading global companies, features the active participation of Saudi Arabian firms. Particular emphasis has been placed on environmental standards: the new airport will become the first in the region to comply with green construction principles. The terminal will include a 46,000-square-meter duty-free zone.
The project’s environmental aspects were also highlighted by the heads of Saudi Arabian companies participating in the event.
Jon Zaidi, Country Manager of ACWA Power, stated:
“On this historic day, we have witnessed the practical realization of the strategic development concept of our two countries. The complex, as an essential part of the step-by-step transition to green energy, will operate on a zero-waste principle.
ACWA Power fully supports this direction and such initiatives. The new complex will attract investment, create thousands of new jobs, and promote innovative solutions in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. From this perspective, the new airport will become a benchmark for the entire Central Asian region. According to Jon Zaidi, Uzbekistan’s experience can inspire other countries in the region to adopt green energy practices actively. We are proud to be part of this process. The goal set by your President to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the country’s energy balance to 54 percent by 2030 is a key element of a broader transformation.
Today, the total volume of joint projects between Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia has exceeded $27 billion. Since the beginning of this year alone, Saudi investments in Uzbekistan have reached $2 billion. Trade turnover between the two nations continues to grow steadily, with 60 flights operated weekly.
The construction of the new airport marks an essential step in modernizing Uzbekistan’s transport infrastructure and transforming the country into one of the region’s leading green logistics hubs”.
