Joining efforts at the regional and global levels

The 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP14), held on February 12-17 in Uzbekistan, is the first UN International Conference on Wildlife Conservation organized in Central Asia.

The event brought together experts from 130 countries and more than 1,500 participants in ancient Samarkand.

Special Representative of the Director-General at FAO Daniel Gustafson addressed the high-level plenary session “Nature Knows No Borders: Working together for migratory species and sustainable development in Central Asia”. He noted that he was encouraged by the richness and diversity of cooperation between the countries of the Central Asian region on the way to the conservation of migratory animal species.

“Central Asia is at the forefront of innovations that allow us to work together and move forward to overcome challenges such as climate change and the irrational use of natural resources, which hinder the conservation and restoration of the habitat of migratory species of wild animals. It is possible to solve these problems only together”, Daniel Gustafson stressed. “The Samarkand Conference is a vivid example of efforts being made at the regional and global levels”.

As the expert noted, the interaction of wildlife and humans remains important because environmental health and human health are inextricably linked.
