Director of the International Institute for Central Asia Javlon Vakhabov met with Associate Professor in International Relations at the University of St Andrews (UK) Filippo Costa Buranelli.
The parties discussed the process in Central Asia and further prospects for increasing multilateral cooperation.
The professor stressed that thanks to the regional course of Uzbekistan under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, a new political atmosphere has developed in Central Asia today. This has identified Central Asia as an example of a regional “order” laying the foundation for further deepening comprehensive cooperation between all neighboring countries.
The expert also focused on the format of Consultative Meetings of the Heads of State of Central Asia, noting its effectiveness and sustainability since its launch. The professor considers the planned continuation of the meetings in 2024 as the second round of annual consultations. It seems that the economy, trade, climate change, and security issues will remain important areas of cooperation.
The steady growth of trade between the region’s countries and an increase in trade turnover by more than 2.5 times was noted. Mutual investments increased almost sixfold, and foreign direct investment increased by 45 percent. The indicators of intraregional tourism have practically doubled.
According to the professor, Central Asia will continue to define its identity while remaining open to dialogue, partnership, and opportunities for international cooperation.
He noted that creating the International Institute for Central Asia was a unique initiative confirming Uzbekistan’s firm intentions to continue its foreign policy course toward enhancing regional cooperation.
Following the meeting, Mr. Buranelli expressed interest in further close work with IICA and readiness to promote cooperation between the expert communities of Uzbekistan and the countries of the European Union.
