Japan hosts International Summit dedicated to the Aral Sea problems

Japan hosted the 4th International Environmental Summit on “Sustainable Development Goals in a Virtual City”, via videoconference.

According to the Embassy of Uzbekistan, the summit has been organized since 2020 to develop new projects and exchange views with the international community on sustainable development in the face of global economic difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing interruptions and limited travel between the countries.

The event was attended by representatives of 8 countries, focusing on the environmental problems of the Aral Sea.

The Ambassador of Uzbekistan Mukhsinkhuja Abdurakhmanov in his video message to the participants gave detailed information about the history of the Aral Sea problem, the environmental situation in the Aral Sea region, the efforts of the Government of Uzbekistan, including the adoption on May 18, 2021 of a special resolution of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly on transforming the Aral Sea region into an environmental innovation and technology zone and the definition of 7 directions for the implementation of this document, holding an international high-level forum on green energy in 2022 in Nukus, in cooperation with the UN.

In addition, a special video was shown on the activities of the UN Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea Region. Participants were invited to work closely with this fund.
