Jadids: Ideas of National Identity, Independence, and Statehood
23:59 / 2023-12-11

Tashkent hosts the International Scientific Conference “Jadids: Ideas of National Identity, Independence, and Statehood”.

The event is organized at the initiative of the Public Foundation for Support and Development of National Mass Media by the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the State Museum in Memory of Victims of Repression under the Cabinet of Ministers, and the Organization of Turkic States.

Advisor to the President, speechwriter Khayriddin Sultanov read out the address of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the conference participants.

The relevance of the conference is determined by the ongoing changes in people’s thinking under the influence of global geopolitical processes and as a result of the growing need among the younger generation to study the history of Uzbekistan.

As the President of Uzbekistan has repeatedly noted in his speeches, the Jadids, the leading representatives of their time, came up with the idea of national revival and development in a challenging period. Their initiatives and noble deeds found a deep response in society and became a powerful force.

The Head of state highly appreciated the humanistic ideas of ancestors and noted that when building a free civil society and the rule of law, it is necessary to rely on their principles.

Assistant to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Saida Mirziyoyeva addressed the conference. Expressing gratitude to the participants who arrived at the event, she noted that the time has long come to discuss one of the essential issues for the country – the education and upbringing of the nation, the continuation of the work begun by the Jadids. The Jadids’ ideas, dreams, and aspirations are reflected in the policies of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Under the leadership of the Head of state, New Uzbekistan, as our Jadid ancestors dreamed, is firmly following the path of building a secular, legal state and a strong civil society, forming a high-quality education system, ensuring freedom of speech and openness.

Saida Mirziyoyeva also drew attention to the issue of reforming the alphabet and noted that over the past years, many opinions have been put forward on improving the national alphabet, heated debates have taken place, but the issue remains open. We cannot endlessly continue the discussion of this theme. We must quickly find a single solution to eliminate the serious mistake that has been made. After all, here we are talking about our nation, pride, the name of our country.

The conference is attended by Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) Kubanychbek Omuraliev, TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev, President of the International Turkic Academy Shahin Mustafayev, President of the International Foundation for Turkic Culture and Heritage Aktoty Raimkulova, as well as famous scientists from the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Sweden, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Japan.

The forum participants focus on conceptualizing the educational ideas of the Jadids, their analysis, and systematization.

The activities and ideas of the Jadids from the point of view of building a secular, legal, and democratic society are examined by analyzing the legislative framework of state structures created by the Jadids in the first quarter of the twentieth century, their contribution to the development of national statehood in Turkestan.

A presentation of the exhibition “Memory Corridor” took place. It is dedicated to the Jadids and the Jadid movement in general: its origins, development, suppression, and the revival of its ideas in New Uzbekistan.

The conference will continue on December 12. It is planned to hold discussions at sessions, as well as open panel sessions with the participation of youth.
