The Senate of the Italian Parliament hosted a conference on the “Middle Corridor: safe transit route between Italy, Azerbaijan, and Central Asia”, organized by the Italian Institute for Asia (ISIA).
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy Edmondo Cirielli, heads of diplomatic missions in Central Asia and Azerbaijan, and prominent Italian parliamentarians and analysts attended the event.
Opening the conference, one of its main initiators, the President of the Bicameral Commission on Regional Issues of the Italian Parliament, Senator Francesco Silvestro, noted that Italian business “should rediscover the Central Asian region, represented today by dynamically developing countries, which is also evidenced by the growth of Italian exports, exceeding $2 billion”.
Ambassador of Uzbekistan Abat Fayzullayev noted that the President of Uzbekistan initiated the adoption of the Strategy for the Development of the Transport System of Uzbekistan until 2035, in which the Trans-Caspian Corridor is highlighted as a key priority.
Uzbekistan and partner countries are also carrying out large-scale work on implementing projects for constructing China – Kyrgyzstan – Uzbekistan and Termez – Mazar-i-Sharif – Kabul – Peshawar railways. In the future, with the implementation of these projects, the volume of cargo transportation along the Trans-Caspian corridor will undoubtedly increase significantly.
