18:53 / 2022-11-02

As previously reported, experts from the Development Strategy Center are currently on a working visit to the Kingdom of Sweden. Within the framework of the visit, several meetings aimed at further enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation between Uzbekistan and Sweden, increasing the activity of the leading think tanks and research institutes of the parties are taking place.

The experts of the Center met with the representative of the Stockholm Environment Institute, which ranks second in the world in the Global Go To Think Tank Index Report ranking, and discussed issues such as preventing risks in the field of ecology and environment, including rational use of all natural resources, and uniting efforts at international level.

In particular, the Head of the Center, Eldor Tulyakov, informed about the reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan regarding the elimination of existing environmental problems that harm the population's health and gene pool, and the rational use of renewable green energy sources.

During the dialogue held between the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the President of the Council of Europe, Charles Michel, which took place in Tashkent last week, special attention was paid to the issues of further enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation in ecology, green economy, energy efficiency and rational use of water.

At the same time, it was emphasized that the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan is regularly announcing several initiatives related to the environment in the international arena, including the Development Strategy of New Uzbekistan for 2022-2026, which contains a goal aimed at developing the Environment Charter.

As Mr. Tulyakov noted, Uzbekistan has joined the most important conventions of the UN in environmental protection and sustainable development and has been fulfilling all its obligations. A mechanism has been developed for the implementation of legislation on nature protection. Targeted state programs, national action plans are developed and implemented. Public bodies, which are an important part of the reforms being implemented, are actively participating in these good deeds.

According to Bernardas Padegimas, Project Manager at the Stockholm Environment Institute, the Organization’s main focus is on environmental problems and threats to development, governance, economy, gender equality and health, and it also supports the adoption of decisions in these areas at the local and international level.

Bernardas Padegimas emphasized the importance of collaborative research results in improving the mechanisms for assessing the level of environmental pollution, monitoring the natural environment, predicting its level of pollution, and expressed his interest in working in cooperation with think tanks and research institutes in Uzbekistan in this direction.

He also expressed his support for Uzbekistan’s green economy initiatives, adopted concepts and strategies, especially for the prevention and reduction of harmful chemical, physical, biological and other impacts.

Following the meeting, the parties expressed their interest in establishing a permanent exchange of experiences between the analytical centers of the two countries and agreed to conduct joint research.
