Long-term observers of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Ruth Van Rhijn and Stephen Farley, who arrived to observe the process of the upcoming elections of deputies to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan and local Councils on October 27 this year, got acquainted with the activities of the territorial election commission in Samarkand region.
At the meeting with the Chairman of the Regional Territorial Election Commission Khujakul Muhammadiyev, and members of the commission, international observers were told about the organization in the territory of Samarkand region of 8 election districts for holding elections to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, 60 for holding elections to regional Councils of people’s deputies, as well as about 30 election districts for holding elections to district and city Councils. In these districts, 1,130 polling stations have been organized, district election commissions have been created, and preparations for the elections are currently underway.

During the dialogue, observers received answers to questions about the specifics of the upcoming elections this year, the process of training commission members, the formation of voter lists, preparation for voting, the conditions created for political parties to conduct election campaigning and other questions.
International observers are also visiting other polling stations in Samarkand and getting acquainted with the commissions’ activities.
