11:24 / 2024-03-27

Geneva, Switzerland, hosts the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The assembly, held twice a year, is attended by hundreds of representatives of parliaments worldwide, including Uzbekistan.

The General Debate focused on the overall theme “Parliamentary diplomacy: Building bridges for peace and understanding” and provided a platform for delegates to deliberate, exchange views, and galvanize parliamentary action in this area.

In her speech, Tanzila Narbayeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, put forward essential proposals and initiatives. In particular, she emphasized that parliaments’ role and relevance are increasing considering the rapidly changing and difficult-to-predict international situation and the lack of mutual understanding in interstate relations.

The attention of the event participants was drawn to the importance of regional interaction, which contributes to the establishment of trusting relations between parliamentarians and the solution of common problems and challenges.

The Assembly will adopt resolutions on the emergency item and on the subject items taken up by the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security entitled “Addressing the social and humanitarian impact of autonomous weapon systems and artificial intelligence” and by the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development entitled “Partnerships for climate action: Promoting access to affordable green energy, and ensuring innovation, responsibility, and equity”.

The Assembly is expected to conclude by adopting an outcome document on the general debate’s overall theme.
