High-quality leather produced in Uzbekistan is valued at up to $500
12:15 / 2022-07-05

High-quality leather has always been appreciated not only by buyers, but also by manufacturers. The leather production process consists of three stages: preparation, tanning and finishing.

Three breeds of sheep are bred in Uzbekistan: Bukhara, Surkhandarya, Karakalpak. The Karakalpak breed is in great demand in the domestic and foreign markets. It is distinguished by a special color, attractiveness and color saturation.

Since 1958, six varieties of the Karakalpak breed of sheep have been bred, including “Shamchiroqgul”, “Pulatsur”, “Urikgul”, “Kambar”, “Shabdar” and “Chakir”. Breeder Yuldosh Jumaniyazov, who bred these species, participated in various international exhibitions in 1980-1982.

Merendera LLC in Turtkul district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan currently breeds more than 400 sheep and supplies over 300 leather goods per year. Today, this company provides the population with high-quality leather products, as well as meat products at an affordable price.

The skins are processed at a tannery in Bukhara region. After that, the processed leather is sold based on mutual agreements concluded with local or foreign buyers. The Karakalpak breed has long been highly valued in the global market. Depending on the quality and color, the skins are sold for $50 to $500. Vests and hats are made from sheep’s wool.
