On March 11-17, Hashar Week project will be implemented in Tashkent for the first time.

On the eve of this event, the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection hosted a briefing for journalists.

This project, implemented by the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection together with Tashkent Khokimiyat, Makhsustrans enterprise, the United Nations Development Programme and a number of other international organizations, includes four directions. The first direction is a competition, where it is necessary to download a specially developed mobile application Hashar Week and register. Then it is necessary to sort the collected plastic, paper, glass wastes and deliver them to 21 collection stations organized in 11 districts of the capital. Winners and active participants will be determined and awarded according to the results of the week.

The educational direction provides for holding open lessons and public lectures in 22 schools. An art exhibition, presentation of the Green Startup projects, roundtable discussions on “Uzbekistan’s ecotourism potential” and a conference “Green Economy in Uzbekistan: Illusion or Reality” will be organized.

According to experts, two thousand tons of household waste will be generated in Tashkent in one day, 700 thousand in a year, and 7-8 million tons in Uzbekistan. Only about five percent of waste is recycled. This figure is much higher – 15-20 percent in large cities of the world.
