The official opening of the Representative Office of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in Uzbekistan took place at the State Committee of Uzbekistan for Ecology and Environmental Protection.
The event was attended by Deputy Director-General of the Global Green Growth Institute Helena McLeod, GGGI Asia Regional Director Achala Abeysinghe, heads and representatives of the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection, ministries and agencies of Uzbekistan, as well as representatives of the UN Development Programme, OSCE and other international organizations. The event began with a video message from the GGGI President, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The GGGI Country Office in Uzbekistan is the first representative office of the institute among the CIS countries, in particular in Central Asia. The opening of the office is especially distinguished by the simultaneous holding of events dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Uzbekistan and South Korea.
Aaron Russell has been appointed the head of the GGGI Office in Uzbekistan, who has taken up his duties in the city of Tashkent since May 2021.
At the event, a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the Global Green Growth Institute and the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development on cooperation in green growth and climate change relevant to the Aral Sea basin.
