Samarkand hosts the International Conference “Mirzo Ulugbek: Great Scientist and Statesman”.
According to the resolution of the President of Uzbekistan of September 12 this year, the 630th anniversary of Mirzo Ulugbek’s birth is widely celebrated in the country.
The conference participants, organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, and the Hokimiyat of Samarkand Region as part of the implementation of this resolution, first visited the Mirzo Ulugbek Observatory and laid flowers at the monument to the great scientist.
The conference’s opening ceremony was held at the Samarkand State University named after Sharaf Rashidov.
In their speeches, Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan B. Abdukhalimov, First Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation O. Mahkamov, Rector of Samarkand State University R. Kholmurodov and others noted the deep symbolic significance of holding this conference in Samarkand – a city that, thanks to Amir Temur and his grandson Mirzo Ulugbek, became one of the world’s largest scientific centers, namely, in Samarkand State University, which is considered the successor of the madrasah founded by the great astronomer.
The opening ceremony of the conference was attended online by the President and Co-Founder of the Association of Art and History of the Timurids in France, Ms. Frederic Bressan. Scenes from the play “Mirzo Ulugbek” were shown, created on the initiative of the association in cooperation with actors from France and Uzbekistan.
This was followed by a presentation of new editions of the great astronomer’s works “Ziji jadidi Kuragoniy” and “The History of Four Nations” in several languages, published for the 630th anniversary of Mirzo Ulugbek’s birth.
The conference continued its work with panel sessions on patronage and sponsorship in eastern astronomy and scientific and spiritual life during Mirzo Ulugbek’s reign.
The discussions touched upon Mirzo Ulugbek’s contribution to the development of astronomy, the results of the latest research into his works, and scientific news. Lectures and presentations were held on the scientific and cultural life of that time, with the participants paying particular attention to the development of astronomy in the East and Europe and international cooperation in this area.
