FAO launches a new project in Uzbekistan to combat climate change
08:16 / 2022-08-04

On August 2, 2022, Tashkent hosted a workshop on the FAO project “Capacity-building to establish an integrated and enhanced transparency framework in Uzbekistan to track the national climate actions and support measures received”. This FAO project is funded by the Global Environment Facility, and the Hydrometeorological Service Center of Uzbekistan acts as the executive agency.

FAO experts and representatives of the Hydrometeorological Service Center informed about the essence of the project, its goals and objectives. It was noted that the implementation of the new FAO project will allow Uzbekistan to contribute to international efforts to combat climate change.

The project was developed to support Uzbekistan in preparing for the transition to a new enhanced transparency framework under the Paris Agreement aimed at strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change. This is an agreement within the framework of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, regulating measures to reduce the content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Participation and regular reporting under an Enhanced Transparency Framework enables governments to better assess and plan their actions on climate. The structure will ensure transparency of information related to greenhouse gas emissions in countries, progress made in reducing emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change, as well as financial and technological support provided to developing countries.

Hydrometeorological Service Center was appointed the coordinating organization for climate change and the implementation of the Paris Agreement by the decision of the Government. Within the framework of its mandate, Hydrometeorological Service Center is responsible for the country’s reporting on climate commitments, including the preparation of national communications, national inventory reports, biennial reports, transparency reports, reports on the implementation of quantitative commitments, nationally determined contributions.
