Committee for the Development of Sericulture and Karakul Breeding of Uzbekistan has held an event dedicated to prospects for international cooperation in this industry.
It was held with the participation of industry experts and specialists, ambassadors, consuls, and advisers on trade and economic issues of the embassies of Uzbekistan in foreign countries, representatives of clusters of enterprises for processing silk and karakul products.
Uzbekistan ranks third in the world in terms of cocoon production after China and India. From this point of view, silk is a reliable source of foreign exchange earnings. 70 percent of raw silk, dry cocoons, silk threads, yarns, fabrics are exported to India, Iran, China, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Russia.
Despite the difficult situation due to the coronavirus pandemic, effective cooperation has been established, as a result, in 2020, the enterprises of the sector exported silk products worth $76.5 million.
At the meeting, information was also presented on the activities planned for 2021 in the industries of sericulture and karakul breeding. In particular, in karakul breeding, it is planned to obtain 15 thousand tons of wool, 608 thousand karakul skins, 6 thousand tons of threads and fabrics, create 281 new enterprises. In the sericulture industry, the export of silk products by the enterprises of Uzbekipaksanoat Association is forecasted for $86.6 million, receiving 935.7 thousand units of finished silk products, 9154.7 thousand meters of silk fabric.
