Ex-President of Bulgaria: Uzbekistan is an active and reliable partner in the global dialogue
15:27 / 2025-08-19

The High-Level Meeting “Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Europe – Cooperation for Common Development” continues in Tashkent.

UzA correspondent interviewed the former President of the Republic of Bulgaria (1997-2002), Petar Stoyanov, as part of his participation in the conference.

– Mr. Stoyanov, as a respected expert in the field of political science, could you assess the significance of this forum?

– This event is essential. Former heads of state, prime ministers, and political figures from various countries gathered in Tashkent, which testifies to its importance.

The negotiations within the framework of this event contribute to strengthening international cooperation and the exchange of views. Such meetings play a key role in the development of bilateral and multilateral relations, as well as in promoting common interests in the international arena.

– What is the significance of the issues discussed at the sessions?

– Delegates from various regions of the world are discussing the global challenges of climate change, which pose a serious threat to the global ecosystem, issues of water resources management, energy security, and sustainable agricultural development.

It should be emphasized that Central Asia is currently gaining key importance in the context of global economic cooperation. This is reflected in the strengthening of its role in the strategic transport, logistics, and energy infrastructure, which ensures the integration of the eastern and western regions.

In addition, under the conditions of globalization, the countries of Central Asia, including Uzbekistan, hold a special position. Bulgaria, as a member of the European Union, supports the development of warm and mutually beneficial relations with this region.

– As a representative of Europe, how do you assess Uzbekistan’s initiatives for integration with other regions and the countries of the European Union??

– In my view, these initiatives are constructive and deserve a positive assessment. Uzbekistan’s foreign policy is based on the principles of peace and friendly relations. Strengthening ties between our countries is of great importance.

I visited your country for the first time 28 years ago. Many years later, I am once again in Tashkent and observe significant changes in the appearance of the city, which has acquired a modern look.
