Essential decisions in achieving the safety and reliability of power systems
21:27 / 2024-03-25

As part of the ATOMEXPO 2024, a roundtable discussion was held on “Renewable and nuclear generation: synergy of achievements as the best solution”.

Director of the Electric Power Industry Development Department of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation Andrey Maksimov and other experts discussed current issues of building energy systems of the future, energy security, technological independence, types of low-carbon production, and pricing features for clean energy sources.

Opinions were heard on issues of energy exchange, advanced energy development, renewable energy sources, and increasing countries’ share of the energy balance as part of addressing the challenges of the global climate agenda.

State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom is a diversified holding company engaged in the development of various branches of low-carbon energy. Rosatom has the resources and capabilities to implement energy solutions that meet the priorities of the global climate agenda.

During the roundtable discussion, it was noted that Rosatom has commissioned over 1 GW of wind energy capacity to date. In total, by 2027, the holding will commission wind power plants with a total capacity of about 1.7 GW.

“Rosatom is following the path of diversification of low-carbon assets. Without nuclear energy and renewable energy sources, it is impossible to achieve the priorities of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Modern industry requires reliable energy sources, such as nuclear power plants, that are ready to cope with the required load at any time. They can use wind energy. To balance the growth in electricity consumption, there must be several low-carbon technology platforms”, noted Grigory Nazarov, Director General of NovaWind JSC, the wind energy division of the Rosatom State Corporation.

A sustainable clean generation mix is achieved through low-carbon baseload generation, such as nuclear or hydropower. The combination of different types of generation makes it possible to achieve the safety and reliability of power systems.
