There was discussion at the conference about work being done on preparing for a second reading a law on making amendments and addenda to the law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On using and protecting plant life”.

It was said that constant attention was being paid in the country to improving people’s ecological culture, to environmental protection and especially to preserving plant life.

Today there are more than 4 thousand 600 species of plant life in Uzbekistan. More than 3 thousand of them are plants growing in the wild, and 324 of them are rare plants listed in Uzbekistan’s red book of endangered species.

Members of the faction of the Uzbekistan People’s Democratic Party worked out proposals and recommendations on some articles of the draft law. The faction members believe that it is important to add to the draft law norms more precisely defining the powers of state administrative and government bodies in this sphere.

It was said at the gathering that there was a need to elaborate several norms contained in the draft law. For instance, Article 6 of the draft law says that state administrative functions in the sphere of using and protecting plant life are performed by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Nature Protection, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and other state and economic administrative bodies as well as local bodies of state administration within their remit. In the opinion of the faction’s representatives, all the state and economic administrative bodies exercising state authority in the sphere of using and protecting plant life should be precisely listed in this Article.

At the conclusion of the discussion, the faction decided to support the draft law’s second reading and to put it up for discussion at a plenary session of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis.
