Development of pharmaceuticals in Uzbekistan discussed

The use of world-class pharmaceuticals is one of the goals of the Development Strategy of the Healthcare System of the Republic of Uzbekistan until 2030, which is currently being prepared for development. An online conference organized by the National Chamber of Innovative Healthcare of the Republic of Uzbekistan jointly with the World Bank Country Office for Uzbekistan was devoted to this issue.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan Abdulla Azizov, Head of the National Chamber Department Klara Yadgarova, specialists from the World Bank Washington Office, the USAID Promoting the Quality of Medicines Plus (PQM+) program.

The expert opinion during the discussion was presented by Dr. Zafar Mirza. He is an international expert at WHO, worked for many years as the head of the WHO department (Geneva), and was also the Minister of Health of Pakistan.

It is planned that Dr. Zafar Mirza will visit Uzbekistan in March 2022 to oversee the process of developing the direction “Pharmaceuticals and medical devices” of the Development Strategy of the Healthcare System of the Republic of Uzbekistan until 2030. The leading organization in this area is the Agency for the Development of the Pharmaceutical Industry.

The representative of the National Chamber, Klara Yadgarova, noted that the involvement of international experts and organizations in the process of developing a strategy is provided for by the resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On additional measures for the comprehensive development of the healthcare sector” of May 25, 2021.

“The strategy defines the goals of the healthcare system, as well as important measures that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals”, K. Yadgarova noted.

At the conference, the contribution to the development of the pharmaceutical direction of the strategy by the USAID Promoting the Quality of Medicines Plus (PQM+) Program was also considered.

According to the National Chamber of Innovative Healthcare of the Republic of Uzbekistan, this is a new area of ​​activity for PQM+ in Uzbekistan, which will also include an industry assessment of pharmaceutical companies, assistance in the development of curricula for the Pharmaceutical Technical University and several other measures.
