Democracy and National Unity Day of Türkiye
18:25 / 2024-07-15

An event dedicated to the eighth anniversary of the defeated coup attempt in Türkiye took place today in Tashkent. The photo exhibition and briefing were organized by the Embassy of Türkiye in Uzbekistan.

On July 15-16, 2016, Türkiye experienced tragic events when members of the Parallel State Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) led by Fethullah Gülen tried to seize power in the country.

Numerous protests, in which hundreds of thousands of citizens took part, thwarted the plans of the putschists. During the events, 252 people died, whose memory is honored throughout Türkiye.

“The Republic of Türkiye is powerful against internal and external threats. FETÖ has been trying to implement its plans for years in Türkiye and beyond. Still, our country stands firmly against this danger”, said the Ambassador of Türkiye to Uzbekistan, Olgan Bekar.

He also noted that Uzbekistan was one of the first countries to identify the threat from FETÖ and expelled its members from the country in the 1990s. This contributed to the development of close relations between Türkiye and Uzbekistan, devoid of provocations and obstacles.

During investigations in Türkiye, more than 700 thousand people suspected of having links with terrorists were brought to justice. The courts handed down verdicts against nearly 5,000 participants in the coup attempt, including 85 former generals.

Democracy and National Unity Day of Türkiye symbolize the courage and unity of the people who defended the country’s freedom and independence.
