97 discovered underground water sources have been identified in Uzbekistan, 19 of them are formed in the territories included in the protected category.

In recent years, in the regions of the country where there is a shortage of water, a large-scale activity is being held on providing the population with drinking water centrally. Currently, the needs of the population of 69 cities, 335 townships and 2,902 villages in drinking water are met by groundwater supplies.

At the conference, the work carried out on forecasting changes in resources and groundwater resources, the impact of man-made factors and assessment of the current state of underground drinking water resources were considered taking into account the conditions for formation of groundwater sources. Attention was paid to issues of searching for new prospective areas of fresh groundwater, identifying factors that adversely affect water resources, development of an optimal system for monitoring the state of freshwater supplies.
