An international conference on “Democratization of criminal and criminal procedure legislation and law enforcement practice: Uzbekistan’s experience” was held in Tashkent.

The event was organized by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan together with the United Nations Development Programme, the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan, UNICEF, USAID, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (Germany) and the Regional Dialogue Organization (Slovenia). It was attended by members of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chamber of Lawyers of Uzbekistan, the High Judicial Council, Tashkent State University of Law, as well as experts from Austria, Germany, the United States, Slovenia, Poland, Switzerland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

It was noted that the world of crime is not only expanding, but also changing its character, in particular, it is entering cyberspace. In order to assess such crimes, to issue a precise verdict, court staff are required special knowledge and training. This, in turn, requires modernization and development of the judicial sphere.

Within the framework of the international conference, sectional sessions were held on “Criminal law reform”, “Criminal process reform”, “International standards in criminal law and process”, “Crime counteraction and crime prevention”.

At the conference, which lasted two days, international experts not only shared their practice, but also adopted the experience of Uzbekistan. Following the event, relevant recommendations were developed.
