As part of the 21st Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the UNCCD (CRIC21), the CRIC21 Green Park was created in “Ohalik” mahalla of Samarkand district.
The Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov noted that since 2021, at the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the “Yashil Makon” (“Green Space”) nationwide project has been implemented in the country, within the framework of which throughout autumn tree planting continues across the country, and invited those present to participate in the creation of a new CRIC21 Park in Samarkand.
Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva, Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change Aziz Abdukhakimov, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UNCCD Ibrahim Thiaw and representatives of foreign delegations planted seedlings in a new park being created on the territory with an area of three hectares.
Over 1,200 seedlings of 10 tree species were planted, including alder, Japanese sophora, catalpa, and ash.
Currently, over 1,200 hectares of gardens and public parks and over one million hectares of green space have been created in Uzbekistan within the framework of the “Yashil Makon” nationwide project. This year, during the autumn tree planting season, which will last until December 1, it is planned to plant 85 million seedlings in forestry farms, kindergartens, schools, universities, and hospitals, along the perimeter of fields, to create “green belts” around landfills and large industrial enterprises. It is also planned to create a “green cover” on 100,000 hectares of the dry Aral seabed.
