Samarkand hosted an international roundtable discussion to raise public awareness of the amendments and additions introduced to the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The event was organized by the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights (Ombudsman) together with the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan and the Hokimiyat of Samarkand region.
It was attended by members of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Commissioner for Children’s Rights, representatives of the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Court, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, the Hokimiyat of Samarkand region, the Chamber of Lawyers, the Tashkent State University of Law, the NGO “Madad”, academics, experts, civil society representatives, human rights activists and media workers.
Ombudsman Feruza Eshmatova, Acting OSCE Project Co-ordinator Hans-Ullrich Ihm, member of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis and the Constitutional Commission for the formation of proposals for introducing amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan Rustam Kholmurodov, First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan Robakhon Makhmudova and others informed on previous referendum processes, amendments and additions to the Constitution.
Information was also provided on the process of preparing the updated Constitution. In particular, it was reported that more than 220,000 proposals were received through public discussion, most of which were taken into account, international legal documents and the experience of more than 190 countries were studied, and six types of examinations were carried out.
At the event, reports were heard on several important issues, such as human and child rights, building a welfare state, justice, the activities of lawyers, environmental problems, and work with civil society institutions.
