The memorial complex, called among the people “Qal’a” (“Fortress”), located in “Dukchi Eshon” makhalla in Andijan, was erected in the 19th century as a defensive mound for the troops of the Russian Empire that captured the country.

The fortress was built in a relatively high part of the city. Most of the streets and makhallas of Andijan could be seen from the wall, more than 10 meters high. The military controlled the situation in the city and prevented riots.

At that time, there were several barracks in the fortress, an arms depot, a canteen and artillery crews. The companies No. 4, 5 of the permanent battalion in Turkestan of the army of Tsarist Russia were located here. These companies included over 250 soldiers and officers.

For 130 years, the fortress has witnessed many historical events, in particular the Andijan uprising led by Dukchi Eshon in 1898. The uprising was mercilessly crushed, 19 rebels were hanged in the square of the fortress.

The fortress was used for different purposes at different times. For example, during the Second World War, this place was an institution for primary military training, then training courses were held for drivers. In the 80s of the last century, the fortress was renovated and it became a department of the regional Museum of Local Lore, and then a department of the Museum of Literature and Art.

The memorial monument of the fortress is registered as an object of cultural heritage. It is often visited by native and foreign tourists.

Currently, the memorial monument of the fortress is a department of Andijan State Museum of History and Culture.
