An evening in memory of the great Uzbek Director Bakhodir Yuldashev at the Essence Theatre-Studio in New York
10:30 / 2023-01-24

With the support of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Essence Theatre-Studio presented the play “Mungli Kuz” (“Gloomy Fall”), a joint project with the Diydor Youth Experimental Theater Studio of Uzbekistan.

Actors Bobur Yuldashev and Obidjon Abdurakhmanov played the main roles in the production of the Director and friend of Bakhodir Yuldashev Nabi Abdurakhmanov, skillfully conveyed the main idea of the work.

Nikolay Nekrasov’s one-act play “Gloomy Fall” turned out to be an innovative work in the complete sense, anticipating the creative searches of Russian dramaturgy of the second half of the 19th century, in particular, the dramaturgy of Turgenev and Chekhov. The action in the play by Nabi Abdurakhmanov staged in the style of the most ancient street art, is moved to the beginning of the 20th century in the estate of a bored Uzbek bai. This is one of the rarest opportunities for theatergoers in New York, and perhaps the only one, to see what a stunning result the combination of ancient Uzbek traditions with modern acting skills gives.

This play is a real hymn to the festive reality of the theater, created both for its sophisticated connoisseurs and lovers and admirers of new theatrical discoveries. Before the start of the performance, Director Nabi Abdurakhmanov highlighted the invaluable contribution of the talented Director Bakhodir Yuldashev to the development of Uzbek theatrical art.

Theater and film actor, Director, Honored Art Worker and People’s Artist of Uzbekistan Bakhodir Yuldashev was born on September 7, 1945, in Kattakurgan district of Samarkand region in the family of People’s Artist of Uzbekistan Shirin (Sorakhon) Meliyeva and actor Tursun Yuldashev. He graduated from the Directing Department of Tashkent Theater and Art Institute, in 1970 he trained at the Grand Drama Theater with Georgy Aleksandrovich Tovstonogov.

He worked as an Assistant Director (1968-1970), Director (1970-1974), Chief Director (1974-1984) of the Uzbek Academic Theater named after Khamza (now the Uzbek National Academic Drama Theatre), was named the youngest chief director among all the academic theaters of the former Union.
