Alexander Merten: “We focus on a person and improving the quality of his life”
20:56 / 2021-04-24

State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom is one of the global technological leaders. It is a multi-industry holding comprising assets in power engineering, mechanical engineering and construction, among others. It is the largest producer of electricity in Russia. The state corporation unites over 330 enterprises and organizations, employing over 250 thousand people.

As previously reported, on April 5-7 this year, Tashkent hosted the International Industrial Exhibition “Innoprom. Big Industrial Week in Uzbekistan”.

At the exhibition, Rosatom State Atomiс Energy Corporation presented the latest technologies and competencies in various fields – from the construction of nuclear power plants to the production of materials with improved properties based on carbon fiber.

The UzA Correspondent spoke with the Advisor to the Director General of Rosatom State Atomiс Energy Corporation, Senior Vice President of Rusatom International Network, Alexander Merten, about the activities of Rosatom and participation in the Innoprom International Exhibition.

– Alexander Alexandrovich, would you please tell us about Rosatom’s activities and success.

– Rosatom is a multifunctional holding. Our main product is nuclear power – from design and construction to the operation of high-power nuclear power plants. Rosatom is the only one in the world to build floating nuclear power plants. Such a nuclear power plant is already operating in the Russian Federation. This is the Akademik Lomonosov Floating Nuclear Co-Generation Plant. In terms of nuclear technology, Rosatom always provides its partners with reference solutions. That is, first we are building a station in our own country, in Russia. When the NPP was built, we checked that it works safely and efficiently. Only after that we offer the project to our foreign partners.

Rosatom develops its activities based on 17 Sustainable Development Goals approved by the UN. That is, we focus on a person and improving the quality of his life. These are our technologies for processing agricultural products, and technologies related to water purification, and digitalization. For example, when we build a nuclear power plant, next to it, you can build a Data Processing Center – DPC. Rosatom develops both wind energy and traditional types of energy. As a technology leader, we offer our developments in information technology for city administrations. For example, Smart City is a unified information basis for the implementation of digital city services. Smart City technologies increase the efficiency of urban process management, making life easier for both citizens and authorities, expanding the opportunity for feedback.

Rosatom includes one of the largest machine-building holdings, Atomenergomash, which produces equipment for nuclear power plants, petrochemicals, and waste disposal. Rosatom in Russia is the largest operator for the disposal of hazardous class I and II waste. We are also engaged in nuclear medicine, that is, the application of nuclear technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of people. Rosatom is also the largest holding company in Russia engaged in logistics. We are the operator of the Northern Sea Route and provide all its infrastructure – from the construction of ports to ensuring the passage of ships. Rosatom is the only company in the world that has a nuclear icebreaker fleet.

– What did Rosatom present at the exhibition?

– At Innoprom, we informed the participants about all the technologies that Rosatom has today to improve people’s lives. We presented a model of the city of the future powered by ecologically clean energy from a nuclear power plant with a VVER-1200 reactor. Augmented reality technology helps to see how carbon-free electricity production (and a nuclear power plant does not emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere) has a beneficial effect on the environment. Thus, we reflected Rosatom’s aspiration to achieve sustainable development in all spheres through the use of nuclear energy and technologies.

– Thank you for the informative conversation.
