First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Director of the National Center for Human Rights (NCHR) Akmal Saidov has met with the Director of OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) Matteo Mecacci.

Mr. Matteo Mecacci highly appreciated the creation and activities of the Parliamentary Commission on the observance of the international obligations of the Republic of Uzbekistan in human rights. He noted with satisfaction the broad and active involvement of Uzbekistan Parliament in the reform process.

At the meeting, views were exchanged on further prospects for interaction within the framework of the signed memorandums of understanding, deepening partnership in improving the legislative process, ensuring the rule of law and human rights.

Mr. Matteo Mecacci, expressing satisfaction with the cooperation between Uzbekistan and the OSCE/ODIHR, noted his readiness to provide support in carrying out a legal examination of draft laws related to human rights and democratization of society.

The OSCE/ODIHR Director highly appreciated the level of development and modernization of electoral procedures in Uzbekistan. In this context, he called on the country to take measures to further implement the recommendations of the OSCE/ODIHR presented following the last parliamentary elections.

Following the meeting, Mr. Matteo Mecacci expressed his readiness to assist in holding the Global Forum “Human Rights Education” and the World Conference on Youth.
