An international seminar titled “Dialogue with the public in nuclear and radiological emergencies” was held in Miharu.
The event was organized in cooperation with the Government of Japan, Fukushima Prefecture, and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Specialists from various countries took part in the event, including Bekhzod Berdiyev, Head of the Information Service of the Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
“The main objective of training at the IAEA RANET Capacity Building Centre is to learn how to promptly provide the public with accurate and reliable information in emergencies, explain possible risks, and build effective interaction between government agencies, the media, and the public”, says Mr. Berdiyev. “Participants became familiar with international experience in nuclear and radiation safety, approaches to promptly informing the population, and strengthening public trust”.

Issues related to countering false information and disinformation, as well as mechanisms for information exchange and coordination among government agencies, were also considered.
As part of the practical component of the training, participants visited the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and areas affected by the accident, and gained practical experience in mitigating its consequences and organizing effective interaction with the population.
All participants were awarded special certificates from the IAEA.
