Uzbekistan and UN Tourism will jointly prepare for the opening of the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism

Uzbekistan and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) have agreed to jointly prepare for the official opening of the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism in 2027.

This became known following the meeting between the Chairman of the Tourism Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Akkulov and the Secretary-General of UN Tourism Shaikha Al Nuwais, in the United Arab Emirates.

The parties discussed strengthening strategic cooperation, developing sustainable tourism, enhancing the competitiveness of tourist destinations, training personnel, and expanding international and regional cooperation.

The negotiations focused on preparations for the official opening of the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism. The ceremony is scheduled for November 2026 in Tashkent, as part of Tourism on the Silk Road – TITF 2026. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed Uzbekistan as the host during a meeting with the UN Tourism leadership on April 1, 2026.

Following the negotiations, the parties signed an agreement to hold the official opening ceremony of the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism. The document sets the legal and organizational framework for preparing the event and coordinating joint actions between Uzbekistan and UN Tourism.

The ceremony in Tashkent will be a key international event for the tourism industry and will enable the country to participate more actively in shaping the global sustainable tourism agenda. The event is also expected to serve as a platform for expanding international cooperation and promoting the country’s tourism potential.

During the meeting, Shaikha Al Nuwais also reported on progress on the International Safe Tourism Code initiated by the President of Uzbekistan. According to her, she personally oversees the document’s development, and engagement with states and international experts on this issue is accelerating.
