Arusha hosts the 153rd IPU Assembly
Arusha hosts the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The event brings together about 2,000 delegates from more than 100 countries.
A delegation from Uzbekistan, led by the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbayeva is also participating in the event.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union aims to strengthen international cooperation and resolve conflicts through dialogue rather than military force.

Today, the organization goes beyond peace and security to address democracy, human rights, gender equality, improved parliamentary performance, and sustainable development.
The official opening ceremony of the Assembly was attended by heads and members of parliament from the IPU member states, as well as representatives of governments and the media.

Conference participants were shown a video message from the President of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Tanzania, I warmly welcome all delegates attending the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Every parliament derives its mandate from the people it represents. I urge you to honor this great trust and become the authors of important initiatives, not only in your own countries but also on the international stage”, said Samia Suluhu Hassan.
At the opening ceremony, Inter-Parliamentary Union President Tulia Ackson and IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong emphasized that, despite differences in political views, it is crucial to overcome existing obstacles to dialogue between parliaments. Fostering strong and inclusive parliaments and advancing parliamentary diplomacy remain the union’s top priorities.
All statutory bodies of the Inter-Parliamentary Union are meeting during the Assembly. The general debate will focus on the main theme: “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all”.
The new IPU President will be elected during the Assembly.
In addition, the Assembly will adopt resolutions on the emergency item on the agenda and on the thematic item under consideration by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights entitled “Inclusive social development for all: Parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of people living with disabilities”. The Assembly is expected to conclude by adopting an outcome document on the overall theme of the General Debate.
