February 20 marks the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This date symbolized the beginning of a new stage of comprehensive cooperation between the two fraternal nations.
Routes that historically ran along the Great Silk Road served as a bridge for the exchange of scientific knowledge, including between our two peoples. The scale of these ties is reflected in the legacy of Hazrat Imam Bukhari – the pride of the entire Islamic world. In his pursuit of knowledge, the great scholar lived and worked for many years in Makkah and Madinah.
The antiquity and strength of these ties are confirmed by the “Bukhara” neighborhoods our ancestors built in the holy cities. The religious sphere remains one of the key pillars of bilateral relations. In recent years, thanks to the efforts of the heads of state, compatriots have gained broad opportunities to perform the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. The organization of trips has been improved, quotas have been significantly expanded, and a modern service system for pilgrims has been introduced. Along with creating favorable conditions for citizens to fulfill their sacred duty, religious and educational dialogue between the two peoples is also being strengthened.
Official visits, high-level meetings, and international contacts have acquired a reliable and sustainable character. In particular, partnership within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation plays an important role in advancing shared interests.
Cooperation in the economic sphere is also developing dynamically. Saudi Arabia has become one of the largest investors in the country. Particular attention should be paid to projects in green and renewable energy. Several projects implemented by the world-renowned energy company ACWA Power contribute to the construction of wind and solar power plants in the country, improving energy efficiency and promoting environmental sustainability. These processes continue in line with the interconnection between the Uzbekistan 2030 Strategy and the Saudi Vision 2030 program.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation is also expanding. The study of manuscripts, research into the heritage of Islamic civilization, and the organization of scientific conferences and exhibitions are bringing the two peoples even closer in the spiritual sphere. Cooperation between higher educational institutions and academic exchanges creates a solid foundation for future generations of intellectuals.
The development of relations between Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia not only serves the interests of the two states but also promotes peace, stability, and enlightenment throughout the Islamic world. The spiritual ties formed over centuries strengthen the modern strategic partnership, enriching it with new content.
