Large-scale activities are being carried out in Uzbekistan to form a global statistical policy, demonstrate national experience and the results of reforms, and study foreign experience. Strengthening international cooperation creates even broader opportunities in this area.

During the elections of members of the UN Statistical Commission for 2026-2029 held in New York (USA), Uzbekistan was unanimously elected a member of this structure for the first time in its history.

– On April 22, under the leadership of the Chairman of the National Statistics Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Behzod Khamrayev, we met with the Director of the UN Statistics Division, Stefan Schweinfest, – says Ulugbek Noipov, Deputy Head of the Department for International Relations and Ratings of the Statistics Agency of Uzbekistan. – We discussed issues such as improving the statistical system in Uzbekistan, the transformation of the Statistics Agency, and bringing methodologies in line with the principles and recommendations of international organizations. Such issues as professional development of workers in the field, conducting a population census, and an inventory of agricultural land were also considered. At the meeting, Stefan Schweinfest noted with satisfaction that Uzbekistan had become a member of the UN Statistical Commission for the first time in its history.

Full membership in the UN Statistical Commission opens up vast opportunities for Uzbekistan to shape global statistical policy, demonstrate national experience and reform results, study best practices from abroad, and strengthen international cooperation. Today, the Commission consists of 24 countries, and it is responsible for defining strategic directions, coordinating the development and implementation of universal statistical standards and methodological principles. Countries are elected to this body every four years, taking into account geographical distribution.

It should be noted that this intergovernmental organization, which determines the development of international statistics, began its activities in 1947 as a functional body of the UN Economic and Social Council.
