The newly appointed Ambassador of Canada to Uzbekistan, Christopher Duggan, visited the Senate of the Oliy Majlis.

During a meeting with Ambassador Duggan, Senate Chairperson Tanzila Narbayeva congratulated the diplomat on his appointment and expressed confidence that his work would contribute to developing relations between Uzbekistan and Canada.

It was noted that Uzbekistan is currently pursuing an open and pragmatic foreign policy with Central Asian countries and the international community. Thanks to the efforts of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the number of Uzbekistan’s close partners on the global stage is increasing, along with the country’s growing influence.

Since establishing cooperation between Uzbekistan and Canada, several positive results have been achieved, particularly in developing trade and economic partnerships. More than 40 joint projects are being implemented between the two countries.

However, significant untapped opportunities and prospects remain. As noted during the meeting, the practical implementation of these opportunities could further enhance the multifaceted relations between Uzbekistan and Canada. Key areas for potential collaboration include investment, science, education, and tourism.

“Uzbekistan has a population of nearly 38 million, with 600,000 young specialists entering the labor market each year. Canada also faces the need for effective workforce utilization. If we establish an exchange of experience in engaging youth in employment, it will elevate the relationship between our countries to a new level”, the Senate Chairperson noted.

During the discussion, prospects for strengthening friendly ties between the twin cities of the two countries were reviewed, along with opportunities to achieve significant results in trade and economic cooperation through investment attraction. Special attention was given to the necessity of joint efforts in environmental protection.

The parties emphasized the importance of further developing interparliamentary relations, including activating friendship groups for cooperation. It was noted that both parties are interested in creating concrete plans and working together to advance legislation and protect human rights and interests.
