Uzbekistan and UNESCO: New world heritage preservation projects

As part of the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held in Busan, Gayane Umerova, Chairperson of the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation and Chairperson of the National Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan for UNESCO, met with Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

The parties examined the progress of joint efforts to conserve Uzbekistan’s cultural heritage sites. They especially focused on restoring the Poi-Kalon architectural complex and creating an open-air archaeological museum in Bukhara’s Shahristan district.

The participants also explored the possibilities for preparing the “Zaamin Mountains” nomination to be later included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. They highlighted that ongoing collaboration with UNESCO helps preserve and promote Uzbekistan’s distinctive cultural and natural heritage internationally.
