A landmark ceremony of signing a joint communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Uzbekistan and Somalia took place in New York. The document was signed by Uzbekistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ulugbek Lapasov, and his Somali counterpart, Abukar Dahir Osman.

The parties expressed their desire to strengthen cooperation within international organizations, including the United Nations and its specialized agencies. An agreement was reached to intensify bilateral contacts to find mutually beneficial areas of cooperation in the political, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres.

The signing of the communique marks a significant step towards enhancing Uzbekistan’s cooperation with African states. The Federal Republic of Somalia has become the 157th country with which Uzbekistan has established diplomatic relations.

In 2024, Uzbekistan established diplomatic relations with 12 countries in Africa, America, and Europe, underlining the country’s active foreign policy and desire to expand international cooperation.
