Urgench International Airport will be back in action on August 5 at 11 a.m. Tashkent time, thanks to a team’s exceptional efficiency. The construction and repair work, originally scheduled to be completed by August 7, was finished ahead of schedule.
Uzbekistan Airports noted that Urgench International Airport suspended operations on July 20 this year due to the start of major runway repairs. During the reconstruction period, all flights were redirected to Nukus International Airport, and passengers were provided with a transfer between Nukus and Urgench airports.
Much work has been carried out over the past two weeks. In particular, the runway covering was replaced and reinforced, which is 3,000 meters with a width of 45 meters, and the second and third taxiways were overhauled. This will allow the airport to accept wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 without restrictions, which in turn will make it possible to increase the number of flights and passenger traffic to Urgench.
The last major reconstruction of the runway in Urgench was carried out in 1997, and partial repairs of its damaged sections were completed in 2018.
