Samarkand hosts the UNESCO General Conference. This prestigious forum brings together representatives of the international community to discuss key issues in culture, education, science, and innovation.

UNESCO’s Director General, Audrey Azoulay, addressed state representatives at the opening of the General Conference and underlined UNESCO’s role and contribution to international cooperation in a world fractured by crisis.

“Eight years ago, I took on the position of Director-General of UNESCO with the conviction that its mission had lost none of its relevance or timeliness. Today, it may be the only mandate around which the world can still come together as an international community in words and actions”, UNESCO Director General said.

According to UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay highlighted that during her 8-year term, UNESCO had increased its resources by nearly 800 million dollars, a growth of 82 percent. She attributed the financial renaissance to a strategic reorganization where UNESCO took “concrete action on the ground”.
