UN proclaims 2028 the Year of International Law
The UN General Assembly has passed a resolution declaring 2028 as the Year of International Law, an initiative started by Turkmenistan.
The resolution highlights that adhering to and respecting international law are crucial for preserving peace and security, enhancing multilateral cooperation, and fostering friendly relations between states.
The document urges UN member states, UN system institutions, and other stakeholders to organize educational, academic, and awareness-raising activities throughout 2028 to promote international law.
The resolution emphasizes peaceful dispute resolution, expanding international legal cooperation, and enhancing legal education. It also encourages increased involvement of young people, academics, civil society organizations, and legal professionals in advancing international law principles.
The General Assembly also expressed support for Turkmenistan’s plan to organize a Global Forum on International Law in December 2028. This event is anticipated to be a significant highlight of the International Year, gathering UN member states, international organizations, UN system institutions, and representatives from academia and civil society.
