UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur positively assesses reforms in Uzbekistan

On September 25, International Press Club hosted a meeting within the framework of the visit of the UN Human Rights Council delegation led by the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers Diego García-Sayán.
The event was attended by officials of the UN mission in Uzbekistan, representatives of foreign countries, organizations working in human rights field, and public.
Diego García-Sayán spoke about effectiveness of the UN delegation’s activities in Uzbekistan, meetings concerning judiciary system held during the week at the ministries and agencies, public organizations and education institutions. He noted the results of the dialogue with the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The delegation also attended the meeting organized at the Development Strategy Center. Participants of the roundtable discussion on “Relationship of civil society institutions with judiciary: experience and prospects” discussed such important tasks as enhancing the role and importance of civil society institutions, reliable protection of legitimate rights of citizens, ensuring independence of courts, which are defined in the Action Strategy.
Following the meeting, the UN Special Rapporteur expressed his proposals and recommendations for further expansion of the scope of reforms, increasing the role of civil society institutions in this sphere.
