In cooperation with several partner organizations, the Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan announces the international competition for the 19th “Oltin Qalam” (Golden Pencil) National Award. The aim is to widely promote the highest achievements in national and global journalism, foster a new mindset in line with the spirit of New Uzbekistan, enrich national media content, honor human dignity in the country, elevate public consciousness and thinking, strengthen the atmosphere of openness and transparency in society, create conditions for media professionals to express their civic position, and encourage critical-analytical thinking and innovative approaches to creative work among journalists.

Television category:
National Award for Best Journalistic Material (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places)
Radio category:
National Award for Best Journalistic Material (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places)
Print Media category:
National Award for Best Journalistic Material (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places)
Online Media category:
National Award for Best Journalistic Material (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places)
For the Best Foreign Journalist’s Material about Uzbekistan:
One 1st place award and four 2nd place awards (covering TV, radio, print, and online media categories)
Additionally, 12 incentive-based nominations will be introduced. A separate announcement will be made regarding these special nominations.
For the winners and prize recipients of the competition:
The recipient of the Grand National Award will be presented with a special diploma, the “Oltin Qalam” statuette, and a car.
First-place winners will receive a diploma, the “Oltin Qalam” statuette, and a monetary award equivalent to 200 times the base calculation amount.
Second-place winners will receive a diploma, the “Oltin Qalam” statuette, and a monetary award equivalent to 175 times the base calculation amount.
Third-place winners will receive a diploma, the “Oltin Qalam” statuette, and a monetary award equivalent to 150 times the base calculation amount.
Winners in the incentive-based nominations will be awarded a diploma, the “Oltin Qalam” statuette, and a monetary prize equivalent to 100 times the base calculation amount.
Each participant may submit between 5 and 7 materials published in print or online media, or broadcast on radio or television, from April 30, 2024, to April 30, 2025, for consideration in the competition. If a creative team, such as a newspaper editorial office, participates in the competition, they should submit 5 to 7 newspaper issues. If a television or radio team participates, they must submit electronic versions (or links) to 5 to 7 of their best programs or broadcasts.
Applicants wishing to compete in the incentive-based nomination for “Best Book in the Publicistic Genre Published in 2024” must submit one copy of the book to the Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan.
The following documents must be submitted along with the creative works for the competition:
– A brief biography of the author and information about their professional background (curriculum vitae);
– A copy of the author’s passport or ID card, and their phone number;
– For media outlets participating as a team: a copy of the registration certificate of the media organization and a copy of the passport or ID card of the head of the organization.
Creative works for the competition may be submitted to the Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan and its regional branches, through the diplomatic missions of the country abroad with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan, or directly by the authors in electronic format. Submissions will be accepted from the competition’s public announcement date until May 25 this year.
Creative works should be submitted via the Telegram account of the Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan, available at number 99-466-10-25 (O‘zbekiston Jurnalistlar Uyushmasi), in the following format:
– Print media: scanned copies (in PDF format) of materials published in newspapers or magazines;
– Online publications: with an active link to the material;
– Television: video materials (between 3 and 30 minutes in length) submitted via Telegram, accompanied by an annotation and a summary;
– Radio: audio materials (between 3 and 30 minutes in length) with an annotation and a summary;
– Incentive nomination – Photojournalism: creative works in JPEG, TIFF, or PNG format, accompanied by an annotation and a summary.
Starting this year, the international competition for the “Oltin Qalam” National Award will be held to celebrate June 27 – Press and Mass Media Workers Day.
The competition winners will be ceremoniously awarded during the festive event dedicated to this occasion.
