A parliamentary delegation led by Tanzila Narbayeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, participated in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29).

As part of the conference, several forums are held to discuss the problems associated with climate change and financing adaptation processes.

Addressing the event, Ms. Tanzila Narbayeva stressed that initiatives and proposals calling on the world community to unite are being put forward under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the implementation of which is currently extremely important.

Indeed, in 2023, Uzbekistan was one of the first in the CIS to take a historic step towards financing the climate change adaptation process by placing green sovereign international bonds worth $331 million on the London Stock Exchange.

Also, considering Uzbekistan’s territorial location, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during his speech at the COP29 Summit, proposed creating an Innovative Agro-Industrial Hub of the United Nations for landlocked countries.

It should be noted that Uzbekistan is taking several important regional and global initiatives to combat climate problems and ensure the region’s environmental sustainability.

Considering the regional and cross-border nature of environmental problems, this year, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution “Central Asia Facing Environmental Challenges: Fostering Regional Solidarity for Sustainable Development and Prosperity”, put forward at the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan.

At the same time, it was stated at the forum that cooperation at the parliamentary level has excellent prospects in solving problems related to climate change and the widespread introduction of new initiatives into practice.

It was noted that in the current turbulent times and conditions of aggravation of global environmental threats, the role and importance of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in implementing these tasks is increasingly growing.

In her speech, Ms. Tanzila Narbayeva also emphasized the importance of exchanging experience between all parliaments in legislation and the need for systematic development of cooperation between research institutes and centers and youth parliaments.

Attention was also focused on the practicality of widespread implementation of joint research, developing evidence-based proposals, and submitting them to governments.
