The 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union continues its work in Tashkent.
This prestigious forum has brought together around 2,000 delegates from 190 countries.
UzA correspondent spoke with Sergei Rachkov, the head of the Belarusian delegation, who serves as Chairman of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives on International Affairs of the National Assembly of Belarus and Chairman of the Commission on International Affairs, Migration Policy, and Relations with Compatriots of the Parliamentary Assembly.
“First and foremost, I would like to congratulate Uzbekistan on hosting such a prestigious and large-scale international conference”, said Sergei Rachkov. “Representatives from more than 180 IPU member states have come to Tashkent to discuss significant issues. These are not just ordinary topics – they are global matters that concern the entire international community. For this purpose, excellent conditions have been created at an international level. But above all, the most crucial aspect remains the Uzbek people themselves. The representatives of this sincere and generous nation always greet you with a smile.
The Assembly’s agenda is very extensive. The standing committees are in session, and the general debates will be held tomorrow. The participants are focused on the issue of social development. People always aspire to live better and more fulfilling lives. This task falls to parliaments. It is crucial to consider what factors parliamentarians take into account when passing laws.
As part of the Assembly, issues related to combating terrorism and ending violence will also be addressed. These are directly aligned with the goals and objectives of the United Nations.
In the expert community, questions are sometimes raised about the necessity of organizations such as unions. We answer that they are indeed essential. There are instances when not all countries fulfill the obligations outlined in the UN Charter, or when actions are taken solely in pursuit of national interests. For example, we are concerned about economic issues. The imposition of unilateral sanctions harms the economies of certain countries and the well-being of their populations. Parliamentarians around the world exchange views on such matters and strive to contribute to resolving conflicts.
I would like to highlight the steady development of bilateral cooperation between Uzbekistan and Belarus. Excellent relations have been established between the leaders of our two countries. The reforms being carried out in both of our nations – aimed at addressing key political issues and improving the well-being of people – are very similar in nature. Our countries actively cooperate in trade, the economy, investment, humanitarian affairs, healthcare, and education. Special attention is also being given to the development of tourism.
I must admit, I would like not only for Belarusians to visit Uzbekistan, but also for you to come to our country. Indeed, many of our citizens travel to Uzbekistan because of its rich history, culture, and natural beauty. However, we also have wonderful natural attractions and museums that are worth seeing. Tourism brings people closer together”.
