OSCE/ODIHR Needs Assessment Mission arrives in Uzbekistan

On May 17, a Needs Assessment Mission from the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) arrived in Uzbekistan to become familiar with the pre-election process.

A meeting was held between the Head of the Election Department at OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Meaghan Fitzgerald and the OSCE/ODIHR Election Adviser Kseniya Dashutina, with the Chairman of the Central Election Commission Zayniddin Nizomkhodjayev.

At the meeting, mission representatives were informed about the preparations for the upcoming snap presidential elections in Uzbekistan, national electoral legislation, and ongoing work according to the approved calendar plan.

Representatives of the Needs Assessment Mission announced their support for ongoing work to improve electoral procedures in the country. They expressed confidence that the upcoming elections will be held based on the generally recognized international democratic principles at a high organizational level. During the visit, the mission representatives will meet with representatives of several ministries and agencies, political parties, and the media.
