Long-standing friendship and bonds of good neighborliness at the alliance level
The Uzbek and Tajik peoples have been connected for centuries through a shared history, common spiritual values, and strong bonds of brotherhood.
Today, this historic unity is being enriched with new strategic content through the development of modern political, economic, and humanitarian cooperation.
The state visit of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, to Uzbekistan on March 26 marked a significant political event, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations. It is rightly seen as an important step that, as a clear sign of mutual trust and strategic partnership, helps not only strengthen ties between the two countries but also promote peace and sustainable development in Central Asia.

Diplomatic relations, established in 1992, have reached a new level in recent years. The increase in high-level visits since 2018 has created new opportunities for cooperation. A key factor has been the open and trusting dialogue between the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon.

One of the key outcomes of the visit was the inaugural meeting of the Supreme Interstate Council of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. This format fosters cooperation based on clear plans and systematic mechanisms. After the talks, a Joint Statement on expanding strategic partnership and allied relations was adopted, along with a package of important documents covering different areas of interaction.

Economic cooperation remains one of the fastest-growing areas. According to 2025 results, mutual trade volume reached $912.3 million, a 30 percent increase from the previous year. The parties aim to reach $2 billion by 2028. To do so, plans include establishing the “Oybek – Fatekhobod” cross-border trade center, implementing the “E-Permit” digital system, and modernizing logistics infrastructure.

Investment cooperation continues to grow steadily. In Uzbekistan, 343 enterprises with Tajik capital are operating, while in Tajikistan, 71 enterprises involve Uzbek participation. The absorption of over $427 million in investments in 2025 shows a deepening of economic ties. During the state visit, 10 major joint projects were launched to create jobs and boost industrial capacity. Notable progress has also been made in the transport sector. The restoration of the “Dushanbe – Tashkent” railway and the organization of up to 10 flights per week have significantly strengthened collaboration. In 2025, cargo transportation reached 9.9 million tons.
The cultural and humanitarian spheres form the spiritual foundation of the friendship between the two nations. Events dedicated to the legacies of Alisher Navoi and Abdurahman Jami, along with educational and youth exchange programs, help strengthen their historical connection. A tangible sign of fraternal relations is that instruction is conducted in the Tajik language in 253 schools in Uzbekistan.
In the international arena, coordinated actions within the UN, SCO, CIS, and OIC confirm the close alignment of the two states’ foreign policy approaches. In particular, the trilateral meeting held on March 31, 2025, in Khujand, as well as the signing of an agreement on the junction point of their borders, became significant historical events on the path to strengthening regional security.
The elevation of relations between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to an alliance level results from long-standing mutual trust and political commitment. This partnership not only aligns with the national interests of both countries but also promotes the sustainable development of the entire Central Asian region.
