Initiatives by youth to implement the Sustainable Development Goals will be supported.

As part of the 12th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), a special open session on "The Role of Parliaments in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) " was held in Samarkand.

During the session, young members of parliament from various countries, representatives of international organizations, and industry experts discussed the role and potential of the legislative branch in implementing the SDGs at the national level.

Tanzila Narbayeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis and Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Commission for Monitoring the Implementation of National Goals and Objectives in the Field of SDGs until 2030, noted that Uzbekistan has achieved significant results in implementing the SDGs across social, economic, environmental, and institutional spheres. In particular, from 2021 to 2025, the poverty level decreased from 17% to 5.8%, and the unemployment rate fell from 10.5% to 5.1% between 2020 and 2025. The enrollment of youth in higher education increased from 18.7% to 47.7%.

These results show that a systematic approach is being formed to implement the SDGs, covering all areas of state policy. Parliaments play an important role in improving the legislative framework, exercising parliamentary oversight over the implementation of state programs, setting budget priorities, and more broadly involving citizens, especially youth, in the decision-making process.

At the session, special attention was given to the significance of the UN General Assembly resolutions "On strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals" and "On strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating social development," which were adopted at the initiative of Uzbekistan.

In particular, the discussion covered the role of young parliamentarians in promoting the SDGs, mechanisms for parliaments to work with youth, expanding youth participation in political and social processes, and inter-parliamentary cooperation to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.

At the conclusion of the event, proposals were made to support the initiatives of young parliamentarians in implementing the SDGs, exchange best practices, and apply effective parliamentary mechanisms.
